Storage Conditions of Battery
Storage
TAKE THE SAFETY MEASURES
Ca-Ca maintenance-free flooded batteries may be stored for 6 months without loss of charge and hybrid batteries for 3 months. If the batteries are stored as discharged, they get damaged. All batteries should be stored in a cold and dry place; furthermore, if the flooded batteries shall be stowed on each other on a flat surface, they should be stored so by putting separator (e.g. Styrofoam) between them. Top of battery should be clean.
You should observe the principle First In First Out. Plant release date and storage date should be labelled on the stowage. For example, the code number 280421 on the battery means that the battery was manufactured on the twenty first day of April in 2018 on the production band two.
Requirement of recharge for Calcium Ca-Ca flooded batteries
- It should be recharged once in 6 months if the average storage temperature is below 27 centigrade degrees(*)
- It should be recharged once in 3 months if the average storage temperature is above 27 centigrade degrees (*)
- It should also be recharged when the open circuit voltage of the battery goes down to 12.4V. This method is alternative to the items (1) and (2).
- For hybrid flooded rechargeable batteries, these period are about ½.
CAUTION. Do not allow acid spill and heat above 52 centigrade degrees when charging. If temperature increases, reduce the charging current or stop charging until the battery gets cold. High charging temperature cause damage to the battery.
Test Operations
TAKE THE SAFETY MEASURES
When checking a battery, always check the following before starting the test procedure:
- Any displaced, loose or broken posts.
- Any cracked-broken box or cap
- Any displaced, broken or covered plugs and gas output holes.
- If the battery is not damaged, proceed to the next step.
Measurement of the Charge Level:
Measure the open-circuit voltage by means of a precise volt meter.
NOTE: Never measure charge status of a newly charged battery on or off the vehicle. In such case, there is surface charge with misleadingly high voltage. In order to remove the surface charge, discharge the battery with 15A for 15 seconds or, if it is placed on the vehicle, by switching on the high beam lights for 15 seconds.
If the charge status:
If it has minimum 75% (approximate voltage=12.4V) charge, proceed to the load test. If it is less than 75%, charge the battery according to the method given prior to the load test. Voltage and densities may vary depending on the battery design.
Load Test:
Battery test under-load and evaluation of its results depend on the system of the equipment used. Load test and evaluation of results is performed according to the instructions of the equipment.
Checking the Electric Equipment of the Vehicle:
When you attach a new battery or when a defected battery comes, check the electric installation of the vehicle related to the vehicle. The most common fault with the vehicle is overcharge or undercharge. Measure whether the alternator output voltage is 13.8 – 14.4 V for hybrid batteries in case of a normal battery and under full acceleration; and it should be 13.8 – 14.8 V for Ca-Ca batteries (for 12-V vehicle)
NOTE: For vehicle where the electronic circuit and coding are deleted when the battery is removed, you should prevent system failure by means of a second battery or special equipment before you remove the battery.
